Pablo Picasso (born October 25, 1881, in Málaga, Spain – died April 8, 1973, in Mougins, France) was one of the most influential and groundbreaking artists of the 20th century. A Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and one of the founding figures of modern art, Picasso’s work spanned multiple decades, and his innovations in art continually pushed the boundaries of what art could be. Renowned for his versatile approach to style, form, and subject matter, Picasso redefined the very nature of visual expression, becoming synonymous with the avant-garde movements that emerged in Europe during the first half of the century, particularly Cubism, Surrealism, and Symbolism.

One of Picasso’s most revolutionary contributions to art was his role in the creation of Cubism, a movement he co-founded with fellow artist Georges Braque in the early 20th century. Cubism, which rejected the traditional rules of perspective and representation, fragmented and reassembled objects in ways that allowed them to be seen from multiple angles simultaneously. This radically new approach to painting was a departure from the more realistic depictions of the world that dominated art before. Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) is often cited as a pivotal moment in the development of Cubism, as it depicts figures in a fractured, geometric style that would influence countless artists in the years to come.
