Gerardo Murillo (born October 3, 1875, in Guadalajara, Mexico – died August 15, 1964, in Mexico City, Mexico), better known by his artistic pseudonym "Dr. Atl," was one of the most influential figures in Mexican art during the early 20th century. A visionary painter, muralist, and writer, Dr. Atl is best known for his innovative landscape paintings that brought Mexican natural beauty to the forefront of modern art. His name, "Dr. Atl," meaning "Doctor Water" in the Nahuatl language, reflected his deep connection to nature, particularly the volcanic landscapes of Mexico.

Dr. Atl's artistic style evolved from his initial interest in realism to the development of a modernist, expressive approach that would influence generations of Mexican artists. His works often depict the dramatic Mexican landscape, particularly volcanoes, mountains, and the vast skies, rendered with bold, sweeping brushstrokes and vivid colors. His landscapes are marked by a sense of dynamic movement and emotional intensity, capturing the powerful forces of nature with a style that blends realism and abstraction.
