Francisco Toledo (born July 17, 1940, in Oaxaca, Mexico – died September 5, 2019, in Oaxaca, Mexico) was one of Mexico’s most celebrated artists, renowned for his distinctive works that combine elements of indigenous culture, surrealism, and social activism. His work as a painter, printmaker, sculptor, and environmental activist made him a leading figure in contemporary Mexican art.

Toledo’s deep connection to his native Oaxaca, its traditions, and its struggles formed the foundation of his artistic practice, which was deeply rooted in both Mexican identity and a commitment to the preservation of cultural heritage.

Toledo's artistic style evolved over time, incorporating elements of surrealism, symbolism, and abstraction, but his work consistently emphasized the spiritual and mystical aspects of life. His paintings, prints, and drawings are often marked by intricate lines, organic forms, and a rich, earthy color palette that evokes the textures and rhythms of nature. Toledo frequently depicted animals, human figures, and mythical creatures, blending the natural and the supernatural in a manner that is both evocative and enigmatic.
