Carlos Mérida (born December 2, 1891, in Guatemala City, Guatemala – died December 21, 1984, in Mexico City, Mexico) was one of the most prominent Latin American artists of the 20th century, known for his pioneering work in modernism and abstraction. Mérida’s innovative approach to art combined elements of his indigenous Mayan heritage with European modernist techniques, creating a distinctive visual language that bridged the cultural divide between tradition and contemporary art.
One of the hallmarks of Mérida's work is his exploration of abstraction. He was one of the first artists in Latin America to incorporate abstract forms into his work, moving away from traditional representational art to focus on geometric shapes, lines, and patterns. His work often included stylized representations of the human figure and indigenous symbols, combined with vibrant, bold colors. His use of abstraction was a reflection of his desire to communicate the spiritual and cultural heritage of his people in a modern context.
